Costa Rica volcanoes and volcano tours -- which Costa Rica volcano would you want to tour, if your vacation allowed time to visit just one of the volcanoes? Arenal? Poas? Rincon Vieja? Which hotels or hotel are near the action, and how convenient is a day trip from San Jose? We'll answer your questions and give you some options for your perfect Costa Rican volcano vacation
Arenal and Poas volcanoes are the top two Costa Rica volcano tours. At Poas, you can look down into the crater and take pictures as plumes of steam drift up from the pale green waters.
At Arenal, which is much more active, you can't get close enough to take photos of the crater. But you'll thrill to the sound and fury of huge boulders flying from the craters and tumbling down the sides. And the scene is spectacular at night, when red and yellow bursts illuminate the skies over the peak.
Poas is closer to San Jose, so you have more time at the site if taking a day trip. There are day trips to Arenal from San Jose and the beach hotels in Guanacaste. Poas erupted in March, 2006, at which time the park was closed to tourists until it either settles down or blasts this part of Costa Rica back into the stone age.
True fans of hot lava and huge boulders will want to spend a night in nearby La Fortuna, which offers an inspirational view of Arenal. We recommend the Tabacon Resort, whose luxury rooms each offer a balcony with a view of Arenal. Budget and standard lodging and accommodations are also available, and trips to nearby rain forests and cloud forests in Monteverde and Santa Elena are also fun activities.
Rincon Vieja, north of Liberia in Guanacaste, is another top attraction. This is often called the "Yellowstone Park" of this country, because of the geysers, mud baths and related phenomenon. Aerial canopy tours and horseback riding are part of the full-day tour available from Flamingo, Tamarindo, Ocotal, Coco.
Adventure vacations and tours can also mean rainforest tours, scuba diving, surfing, sportfishing for marlin, deep sea fishing, and enjoying exotic nightlife. Contact us at info@costaricauncovered.com or check out our 7 day specials on the home page.
