Waterfalls near Lake Arenal

Lake Arenal vacations mean more than seeing the volcano. Lake Arenal is the site of several waterfalls, like the one seen in this photo.

You will also find excellent freshwater fishing for unusual fish such as the guapote, or Rainbow Bass (a name that was given to this species by Jerry Ruhlow, editor of Costa Rica Outdoors magazine and fishing columnist for the local newspaper, Tiki Times.

Windsurfing is also a popular activity. Some enthusiasts of this sport have called Lake Arenal one of the top places in the world to windsurf. (However, keep in mind that crocodiles have been sighted in these waters over the past several years, and try to avoid falling into the maw of one of these reptiles.)
Several resorts and upscale hotels are located near the lake, which has a stunning view of the volcano. Fishing lodges too, for those who want to devote at least part of their holiday to catching one of the unique species that dwells beneath the surface of this enchanted body of water.
