Information on Costa Rica Volcanoes

All the information on Costa Rica volcanoes you need to plan and enjoy a trip this tropical paradise is found on this page. We also have information on specific volcanoes on other pages.

The volcanos in this country run along a series of mountains that begins at the northwestern edge, at the border with Panama, and proceeds to west of the Central Valley and the capital, San Jose. Several active volcans may be reached on a day trip from the city. This includes Volcans Poas, Irazu and Turrialba. Arenal, too, though you'll want to spend at least one night there to see even half the attractions.

Arenal is also close enough to the Guanacaste and Nicoya beaches for a day trip. So is Rincon de la Vieja National Park, north of Liberia. The latter has been called this country's Yellowstone Park, as in addition to an active volcano, it also offers hot springs, geysers and mud baths

Watchin' the Lava Flow

Arenal erupted in July, 2004, but the biggest in recent years was in 1998. It puts on a great show every night, except during rainy season, when you won't see much. Poas remains calm, but reports indicate activity at Irazu and Miravalles (midway between Rincon and Arenal). You can look down in the craters of Poas, Rincon Turrialba, but the one at Arenal is inaccessible.

You may ramble about most of the National Parks on your own, but we suggest a guide. Stay away from restricted areas and follow all signage. Several tourists and even guides have been injured as a result of venturing into unauthorized areas at the time of a venting of steam and gas.

Lake Arenal has boating and fishing, even windsurfing. Canopy tours are available near all the National Parks. Rafting and rain forest tours round out the menu of activities. Some, such as Rincon and Arenal, permit camping for a reasonable fee.
