Beach Pictures: Playas del Coco
Playas del Cocos, whose main beach (shown in this picture) is more brown than white, is a party town, a surfing town, a fishing town. It is in Guanacaste, where scuba diving is great. From the Liberia International Airport, you can get to the town in less than 30 minutes. Many hotels offer shuttle service, and taxis are plentiful.
Cocos means coconuts, of course, and the shore is lined with these graceful trees that arch over the ocean so they can drop the coconuts to be carried off to grow. Coconuts are used in the local cooking, a number of tropical drinks, and even to make ash trays.
In town, you can choose from a Best Western or others that are more colorful. There are a few casinos, but as always, we highly advise against playing in this country unless you are doing so for sheer entertainment. (There is no government supervision, as in Las Vegas and Atlantic City).
Hotels and resorts reduce their rates by half during green-rainy season, which begins in May and lasts through mid-December. But even during high season, you can usually find a good price on a cabina or other budget lodging, and still be close to the water.
