La Fortuna is home to the most impressive set of waterfalls in the Arenal Volcano area. (The towns's name, "fortune," refers to the fact that is on the safest side of the volcano. Even so, you can get a great view of the volcano erupting at night.
Located south of town, these falls are the perfect location for an afternoon picnic. Or to go swimming beneath the roaring cascades. They can be reached by car or by foot, though it is quite a hike back after a day of adventures such as this one.
However, this setting can be tricky, even dangerous, during rainy season if you are not paying close attention. When a large torrent of water suddenly hits the water - and anyone swimming beneath it - the force can easily knock a grown man off his feet.
This occurred in June, 2005, when a group of two dozen tourists had to be receive assistance from emergency workers in the area. No one was injured, but it is a reminder to be ready to get out of the water in a hurry.
