Hotels in Quepos, Costa Rica, range in quality and price from the Best Western Kamuk to the Sanchez. There are only a few true hotels in downtown Quepos.
All the others in the area are up the hill in Manuel Antonio. Cabinas and other budget lodging is the mainstay of downtown innkeepers.
The Kamuk gets a refreshing sea breeze, as the Pacific is across the street. Cabinas Cisne has a couple of squat and ugly brick buildings near the soccer field. The Villa Romantica is at the bottom of the road up the hill, is farthest from town and, therefore, not as noisy.
But aside from saving money, we don't see any reason to stay downtown. Resorts and other lodging in Manuel Antonio are equally convenient to the dock, where fishing and diving boats tours depart. And they are even closer to Manuel Antonio National Park.
This is why we recommend that most people stay "up the hill" from the downtown area (which explains the local joke about "going downhill" into Quepos proper). You will find a wider range of accommodations, including villas and rental houses in Manuel Antonio, and a far more pleasant atmosphere.
This is especially true for honeymooners, as the only honeymoon and wedding packages are at hotels up the hill
Off Season Means Lower Hotel Rates
All the hotels and resorts in Quepos and Manuel Antonio reduce their rates during rainy season, most of them by 50%. You can get a great room at hotels such as Plinio's during this time. A new hotel, Banana Tree, was pricing their rooms at $20 a night in June and July, 2005.
High season is fast approaching (this was updated in September), so be sure to make reservations for December through February soon.
