Quepos Fishing

Offshore Fishing: Quepos, Costa Rica

Fishing from Quepos, Costa Rica, offers the best offshore sportfishing in the Western Hemisphere.

When you go offshore fishing from Quepos, you can count on exciting action throughout most of the year
Except maybe October, which is the rainiest month.

The fishing town of Quepos is less than an hour south of Jaco on the Central Pacific coast. It's a four-hour drive from the capital, but you can fly into Quepos on regularly scheduled Sansa and NatureAir flights in about 30 minutes.

Many of the top fishing boats in the country are based in Quepos-- serious go-getters such as WaveDancer and Reel Deal Rates run from $950 to $1,350 for the top boats, but could escalate another $100 in 2008 due to the cost of fuel.

And a lot of other sport fishing boats move down to Quepos in late November or mid-December to be in position when those big schools of billfish start moving up from Panama through the waters off Golfito and Puerto Jimenez.

Quepos is jumping by the last week of December, when the harbor is stacked high with charter fishing boats.

Even so, reservations are recommended, especially for the bigger ones and those that already have a substantial list of satisfied anglers. For photos of local fishing boats, see Costa Rica Boat Charter
2007 Quepos Fishing Reports
July 25: few fishing boats going out this month, but lots of wahoo, small tuna off Veinte Seis; While you can catch plenty of wahoo and dorado without going too far from the shoreline, a seasoned captain will pop offshore 15 to 20 miles to get the billfish. Count on an hour or so out before you get down to fishing -- this is where a bigger, more comfortable boat can make a big difference.

The local dock is not much closer to downtown than to Manuel Antonio, where most fishermen anchor. (A marina is being built, but won't be ready for at least a year).
