Costa Rican Fish Pictures - Dorado

The Dorado, often called Mahi Mahi in the states, is definitely not a "catch and release" fish, as it is among the best-tasting species on the planet. Baked, fried broiled, and barbequed with olive oil salt and pepper are favorites of many fans of this fish.

The one seen in this picture was caught off Quepos, Costa Rica on a twenty-three foot boat. This is one of the best fish you can catch on an inshore trip. It is a clean, white meat that has a texture perfect for broiling or frying.

British novelist Frederick Forsyth called the Dorado the best-tasting fish in the sea. He was right. (Most hotels and resorts will cook your catch for a modest fee.)

They are often found hiding under a floating log or other debris, which means one good place to look is outside the mouth of a river; not too close, however, as the currents can easily tip over a small boat.

For this reason, the best time and place to catch Dorado is usually in late May, the beginning of rainy season. The rivers send lots of debris floating out to sea, giving the Dorado more places to hide under.

By the way: the Dorado is a member of the dolphin family, but don't panic. It is in no way related to Flipper!
