Marlin fishing in Costa Rica -- for the top marlin fishing here, we suggest one of the beach from towns along the Pacific coast. Quepos is recommended from December through May, with Guanacaste and Nicoya better the rest of the year. (October is generally too rainy no matter where you go).
The Atlantic is better for tarpon, though you may find the big billfish farther south on occasion.
Blue and black marlin are common, and the rare striped variety is occasionally taken. Catch and release is standard operating procedure on all the boats in these waters
The drop back technique is universal here.
Offshore flyfishing has become increasingly popular, and many world sportfishing records for flyfishing as well as billfish in general have been realized off Guanacaste, Quepos and Nicoya shores.
The Season for Marlin
Marlin fishing season starts in August in the remote Southern Pacific waters off Golfito and Puerto Jimenez. High season for anglers is January through March, though it can kick off as early as October.
Many beach hotels and resorts cater to fishermen, and you may also find a luxury villa or an all-inclusive resort in Manuel Antonio or Guanacaste. Don't forget your camera for photographs and pictures
Quepos and Manuel Antonio
The best hookups in the Central Pacific area commences in September, but December and January are the top months for the monsters. Things slow down in May. Blue, striped and black marlin are also taken throughout the year, though they usually travel farther out than during the best months.
Guanacaste and Nicoya
November, the bills are moving north to the Nicoya coast and eventually up to the Gold Coast area on the northwest side of Guanacaste. The action, while good all year, is hot and heavy through March. The Bat Islands to the north of Flamingo offer great fishing when the big ones are not biting off Carrillo and Garza to the south.
Playas del Coco and Playa Ocotal boats can zip south to Nicoya and north to the Bats -- where ever they are bitin' that day -- and offer active nightlife and pleasant beaches
Golfito & Drake Bay
Golfito is under fished due to its remote location, so consider an offshore charter there if you're having a bad run. Drake Bay, halfway between Quepos and Golfito, is more convenient to Corcovado National Park.
Catch and Release
The signature techniques of this country's seasoned captains and crews are dropback and offshore flyfishing. Both of these techniques call for extra skill on the part of the captain, crew and anglers.
